** NOW RECRUITING INTERNS FOR 2016/17 **

Please help the Justice Leadership Program find young adults for the 2016/17 year! Check out new videos of our interns on our website.

In the last season, we lit the advent candle for Peace. As we read news stories every day, we know there is a long path towards peace in our nation. The violence of poverty, racism, and fear manifests in the deaths of those who are most marginalized in our society at an alarming and unacceptable rate. As Christians, we are called to affirm the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “True peace is not merely the absence of tension it is the presence of justice”--- in word and deed.

The Justice Leadership Program, supported by the Pacific Northwest Conference as well as many local congregations, is a part of the UCC’s work towards a more just and peaceful society. The Justice Leadership Program gives young adults the opportunity to develop their faith, build their skills around advocacy and community organizing, and lead our congregations in being a justice-seeking people.

Many young adults returned to their home congregations during this time of year. We encourage you to follow up with those whom you may have connected with, and
mention the Justice Leadership to these young adults. Many of them will be considering the Peace Corp or AmeriCorps, but not know their own denomination has this opportunity!

To learn what current UCC interns are doing, visit our website to see short video clips. Please print out the one pager and trifold to put them in a visible place in your church and forward information (via email or Facebook) about the program to any young adults you may know!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Peace,
Jenn Hagedorn

SIGN UP TODAY, Jan. 22 ...

"Anti-racism day long training for Keystone UCC"

Keystone has been assembling a team to attend an all day training together on Tuesday January 26, sponsored by the Church Council of Greater Seattle.  It is to prepare congregations for anti-racism work over the long haul.  The suggestion is 4 people.  Contact Pastor Lauren if you can join our team.  This is an opportunity for Keystone to invest in a day that we hope will ripple forward.

Ann Marie Do, one of our Justice Leadership Program interns, has been helping with this at the Church Council of Greater Seattle.  She would welcome talking to anyone who wants to scope it out a bit.

Take a quick look; registration is by today, Jan. 22.

Dr Heather Hackman will lead the day.  She is nationally renowned for her work on race and racism, social justice and multicultural education, and oppression and social change.

Hackman's website shows how she has provided significant leadership within the environmental community and other justice organizations in the Puget Sound.

The approach is toward making strategic and lasting culture shift in organizational culture. Keystone will get the group rate (four people for only $100) and our goal is for a positive impact, as a group of us trains.

You can reach Ann Marie Do, UCC Social Justice Intern, The Church Council of Greater Seattle 206.525.1213 ext. 106 to register, or with questions:  amdo@thechurchcouncil.org

Blessings, Pastor Lauren

More:  This workshop is meant to engage congregations who are exploring an in-depth commitment to undo racism over time, as a way of life and of being church. All who attend should expect to be changed by the experience.

We invite congregations to send a team of up to 4 people, though individuals are also welcome to attend. We ask that teams pay $100. If a team is not possible, we ask that individuals pay $50.

The workshop will take place from 8:30 am to 4 pm at First A.M.E Church, 1522 14th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122. Pay parking is available on site. First A.M.E Church is also accessible via public transportation on bus lines 10, 11, and 12. We will have snacks available but please plan to bring your own lunch.

Registration ends on January 22.

Climate Conversations

As a followup to last Sunday's sermon please have at least one climate conversation this week and share the results after this Sunday's service.

You might start out being honestly curious and ask "What are you most concerned about?" Then slowly tie how climate change will worsen their concern. But do that slowly so they don't feel that your agenda is to talk about climate change and not to listen to their concerns. It is perfectly fine to wait until a second conversation until climate change is mentioned.

We can all put our heads together to plan how to introduce it in the next conversation. Let's all agree to be social radicals and break the taboo of talking about climate change for fear of bringing up negative emotions.

– Rich Voget
