4 Wednesday evenings: FORWARD TOGETHER discussions start February 28

Keystone Friends,

Come out to study & be together in these weeks of Lent.  Wednesday February 28, we begin our four week faith formation series "Forward Together" at Keystone United Church of Christ.  Team taught by Rev. Lauren Cannon, Rev. Rich Gamble, Pastor Yuki Schwartz, and Justice Leadership Program intern Hunter Paulson-Smith.

4 Wednesdays, 6:30 - 8 pm
Feb. 28Mar. 7Mar. 14Mar. 21.

Battson Hall will be open each Wednesday at 6 pm.  With tea & soups available that you can warm up.  6-6:30 pm- the Fireside Room offers you a place to browse the short book chapters.

Each evening includes:
some Bible study/ activity,
some story telling or discernment,
book discussion,
prayers & music.

The book is simply our springboard.  Here is the flavor, and Reading List:

Feb. 28Why we show up. Our moral call.  Discussing what is our moral foundation. Read: Introduction, Chapters 1 & 2. "The Need to Know Who We Are in Times Like These."

March 7- Who will show up.  Our fusion politics.  For what we stand.  How we stand together.  Read Chapters 5 & 6, watch Ted talk: https://www.ted.com/talks/kimberle_crenshaw_the_urgency_of_intersectionality
"Education, Economic Justice, and Voting Rights."
"Labor, Women, and Economic Justice."

March 14How we will show up. What gifts we bring to this movement. How might Keystone community offer our gifts, skills.  Our faith.  Read Chapter 11.
"Our Alliance with LGBT Rights."

March 21When & where we show up.  When are you led to contribute individually in actions?  Then come fortify & share in worship, week by week?  Are you seeing Keystone Church on the move en masse?  Keystone as action generating base?  Called to witness as Keystone church to support groups in existing actions?
Read Chapter 13 & 14.
Beyond Protest to Voter Mobilization.
Lessons from the Movement.

Let us know any questions (lauren.cannon@keystoneseattle.org)

Wednesday February 28 -our Bible study portion bounces off the scripture from worship February 25, and Rev. Rich's discipleship theme.  We are invited to think about our own stories of moral call, as we study
Mark 8:31-36:
8:31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

8:32 He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

8:33 But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things."

8:34 He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

8:35 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.

8:36 For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life?

The book is simply our springboard.  No one need sweat the reading.  We gather to be together in study.  Group discussion format.  Drop in any week.  See you Wednesday!
Forward Together
A Moral Message for the Nation
In the spring of 2013, seventeen people gathered at the North Carolina state capitol to protest extreme legislation passed by the General Assembly. Thousands joined the “Moral Mondays” rallies, making this sustained moral protest one of the largest acts of civil disobedience in U.S. history. Rev. Dr. William Barber II, a pastor and president of the North Carolina Conference of the NAACP and an architect of the Forward Together Moral Movement, tells the story of a new fusion civil rights movement, a “big tent,” in which black and white, gay and straight, rich and poor, old and young, Republicans and Democrats are all welcome.

Film: WAR ON THE EPA (and the 15th anniversary of Meaningful Movies!)

(53 minutes; James Jacoby, 2017)
Friday, Feb. 2; Doors open at 6:30pm; Movie starts at 7:00pm

@ Keystone UCC (downstairs in Battson Hall)

Come help us celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Meaningful Movies, cake included.  Our movie for the evening is the PBS Frontline documentary “War on the EPA.”   The film tells the story of how combatting perceived federal overreach by the EPA became a popular conservative cause.  It unpacks the events that led to the Trump administration’s withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement, and to repealing the Clean Power Plan.   Join us after the film for a discussion with a panel of former EPA employees.

** All events are Open to the Public. Admission is by Donation **

We help communities organize, educate, advocate & build community around social justice documentary film and conversation.
