Keystone Friends, Come out to study & be together in these weeks of Lent.  Wednesday February 28, we begin our four week faith formation series "Forward Together" at Keystone United Church of Christ.  Team taught by Rev. Lauren Cannon, Rev. Rich Gamble, Pastor Yuki Schwartz, and Justice Leadership Program intern Hunter Paulson-Smith. 4 Wednesdays, 6:30 - 8 pm Feb. 28, Mar. 7, Mar. 14, Mar. 21. Battson Hall will be open each Wednesday at 6 pm.  With tea & soups available that you can warm up.  6-6:30 pm- the Fireside Room offers you a place to browse the short book chapters. Each evening includes: some Bible study/ activity, some story telling or discernment, book discussion, prayers & music. Rich's discipleship theme.  We are invited to think about our own stories of moral call, as we study Mark 8:31-36: 8:31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 8:32 He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 8:33 But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things." 8:34 He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 8:35 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. 8:36 For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Rich, Lauren, Yuki, and Hunter will be facilitating discussion. The themes we will explore are as follows:     Intersectionality     Fusion / politics     Systematic change     Strategic roles we can play The first meeting of this group will be a field trip. We hope you can join us as we bring a group down to Olympia for Interfaith Advocacy Day on Tuesday, February 20. The class will meet at Keystone on Wednesday, February 28 and the following 3 Wednesdays (March 7, 14, and 20). Our tentative plan is to meet from 6:30-8:00pm, and starting at 6:00 pm, we will have our meeting space open with tea and instant soups available. We hope you can join us!       Sign Petition to Rescind Activist's Deportation Order Mijente has created a petition to call for the Seattle Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office to rescind a deportation order for Maru Mora-Villalpando, a Washington-based community activist and mother. Maru leads Northwest Detention Center Resistance (NWDCR), an organization that was founded when immigratns held at the Northwest Detention Center began a series of hunger strikes in 2014 protesting their inhumane treatment. ICE is targeting Maru because of her activism, targeting organizers and activists like her as part of their racially motivated deportation agenda. The Season of Lent @ Keystone Ash Wednesday does not always mash up with Valentine's Day, but this year it did, and so we indeed have begun to open our hearts more deeply in our connections with God.  Over the next six weeks we will journey together through this time that leads us to our events in Holy Week at the end of March, and Easter on April 1.  Lent draws us to self-reflective practices not so much a negative giving up, but a positive chance to grow in love of God and neighbor.  In our weeks ahead we have many opportunities to be together to pray, study, and act.  Mark your calendars for the following! The Justice Leadership Program, affiliate of the national Young Adult Service Communities Network, seeks motivated young people ages 21-35 for an 11-month internship beginning in September 2018. Interns learn community organizing and political advocacy working full time at a Seattle-based nonprofit, while living in intentional community and serving a local congregation. (53 minutes; James Jacoby, 2017) Friday, Feb. 2; Doors open at 6:30pm; Movie starts at 7:00pm @ Keystone UCC (downstairs in Battson Hall) Come help us celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Meaningful Movies, cake included.  Our movie for the evening is the PBS Frontline documentary “War on the EPA.”   The film tells the story of how combatting perceived federal overreach by the EPA became a popular conservative cause.  It unpacks the events that led to the Trump administration’s withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement, and to repealing the Clean Power Plan.   Join us after the film for a discussion with a panel of former EPA employees.   ** All events are Open to the Public.
