For Young Adults Exploring Faith and Justice

Momentum is a new young adult gathering sponsored by Faith Action Network: They gather to do something every other month. And provide a place where interpersonal relationships can be developed. As well as explore the intersections of faith and justice together!  If interested, you can email Chasity or check out the Facebook group.

Keystone stands with The Poor People's Campaign

On December 1, The Rev. William Barber (author of Keystone's last Book Study selection) had an article in The Guardian, entitled, ”The Republican tax bill is not just immoral. It's an act of violence.” The article calls on the poor and people of conscience to stand up and demand to be heard. The following Monday, Rev. Barber launched "The Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival." Keystone is active with the campaign, and if you would like to get involved, speak with Connie, Hunter or Amber, or visit https://poorpeoplescampaign.org/

To Rich V., who was in Olympia on Nov. 28, packing the room, as the Energy Council recommend to Gov. Inslee: disapprove the Tesoro oil terminal, and reject rail project.

To Hunter P-S who led the Friday Dec. 1 Meaningful Movies showing of ‘The Trans List.’

To the many who fed the folks at Sacred Heart Shelter on Dec. 2.
Dear Faith Partners,

We're So Close - Initiative 940
Many of you have been working tirelessly gathering signatures for Initiative 940. As we approach the deadline, we need your help. There are only a few weeks left to move the initiative forward. The campaign has indicated that 89,000 more signatures are needed with 21,000 of those coming from volunteers. What if faith communities across Washington State could help fill this void? Together we can make one last push to ensure that 940 makes it to the legislature.

King County: don't miss an opportunity to rally with the campaign and supporters of the initiative this Sunday, December 10th at 1PM. A rally will begin at Cal Anderson Park, and we want the faith community to have a strong presence there. A flyer for the event is attached. Please spread the word and share the flyer with others. If you've run out of petitions or need more, please let the FAN staff know. For additional information about the initiative please see the attached one pager. If you have any additional questions feel free to contact Sophia Nicholson Keener, sophia@deescalatewa.org.

The King County Immigration Ordinance
If you live in King County, please urge your Council Member to support immigrant rights! This ordinance will ensure that King County's limited resources are not used to support a federal deportation agenda. Let's ensure that local law enforcement is not taking part in enforcing the federal immigration system. When these lines are blurred, noncitizens are less likely to report crime or appear as witnesses, making us all less safe. Let's make King County a leader in protecting the safety and civil rights of everyone. Urge the Council to pass the immigration ordinance.
Thank you all for your incredible advocacy.
Best,
Amber Dickson

Mark your calendars to enjoy December contemplative evening worship services at Keystone UCC.

Holden Prayer is 30-minute candlelit evening service with lots of singing, scripture and reflective time! Come as you are, for some peaceful contemplation after your day.

Wednesday, December 6, 7-7:30 PM
Wednesday, December 13, 7-7:30 PM
Tuesday, December 20, 7-7:30 PM
Holden Prayer is brief evening candlelit service with lots of singing, scripture, and reflective time.  Come as you are, for some peaceful contemplation, at the end of your day.

Holden Village is a Lutheran (and quite welcoming of all) retreat center in the Cascades that started this lovely prayer service.  Many of the hymns we sing in Sunday worship (green Gather hymnal) were written by Marty Haugen who once took a sabbatical in the Holden Village in 1986.  He composed Holden Evening Prayer  while he was there.  Its a vespers (evening) service, that is now done in many places for simple contemplative worship.  About ten years, two Keystone year-long volunteers, Melissa and Eric, were serving as young-adult interns at Keystone, and they brought us this practice.

Come for some shelter in what is an all too busy season of much scurrying.  Come breathe deeply with others at Keystone for any and all of these Wednesday evenings.  Bring a friend!  All ages welcome!
For more info, contact Pastor Lauren Cannon at Keystone UCC: (206) 632-6021 or at lauren.cannon@keystoneseattle.org

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE ...

Following Holden Prayer, Seattle Dances of Universal Peace invites all up to their WednesdayDances, 7:30 pm in the Learning Center. And December 20 is a special extended Dance: The Lords Prayer in Aramaic, 7-9:30pm. All are welcome!

Mediators Nora and Jim - friends of Keystone- are offering three free Discussion Circles in prep for holidays -- check these out!

Review: 'The Trans List' at Meaningful Movies, led by JLP Intern Hunter Paulson-Smith

On Friday, Dec. 1, Meaningful Movies held a screening of 'The Trans List,' a film by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders. The night was a huge success! Above is a picture of Hunter Paulson-Smith, E West, and Nathan Townley, the three panelists who led the discussion after the film.

If you missed the film or are curious about learning more about trans and non-binary identities, here are some links to some articles and resources to learn more:

39th Annual
Festival of Hope!

Saturday, November 18, 10am – 4pm
Sunday, November 19, 12-3pm

Spread the word and bring your friends to Keystone's annual Festival of Hope! Each year, our Keystone community raises thousands of dollars to support programs that alleviate hunger and poverty, both locally and around the world. Join us and shop for a cause this Christmas!

Total throughout the Festival’s history, we have raised over $340,000 to help others!

THERE'S STILL TIME to keep an eye out for Festival items or things you might like to make or donate.
  • Soups for deli
  • Baked goods
  • Books
  • Holiday decorations
  • Nice household items/décor, things you could give as a gift
  • Vintage/Antiques
  • Jewelry
Cashiers, booth-attendants and set-up/breakdown helpers are also always needed. Talk to Eliza to sign up.

AND DON'T FORGET!

THE BAKE SALE: Planning to bring items to the FOH bake sale? The bake sale is always popular and it would be great to have whatever you want to bring. It would help in planning if we have a general idea of what will be arriving. That way we can fill in gaps and make sure we have a variety of items.

There’s a sign-up sheet at church or you can e-mail Margaret Graham at magraham4@comcast.net or text/call 206-353-1323. Thanks in advance for any contributions!

THE QUILTS! Click HERE for a preview of the beautiful quilts up for auction at this year's Festival of Hope.  The quilts are hand-made by our quilter par excellence, Mona Hassan. When you bid on a quilt, you will enter an auction to win a quilt, AND you will help Keystone donate to Healing Art Missions, who were here with us leading worship on March 19, 2017.

Bring your family and friends and work together raising money to help those less fortunate!

Earth Ministry
Fall Colleague Gathering: Resilience Potluck

Date: Tuesday, November 14
Time: 6-8pm
Location: Keystone UCC, 5019 Keystone Place N, Seattle, WA 98103

Whether you’ve been attending Colleague Gatherings for years or have not once made it to an Earth Ministry event, we hope you will join us for an evening of community building on November 14. Earth Ministry staff, colleagues, and friends from across the region are coming together for a shared meal and good conversation around the topic of resilience. We will discuss what resilience looks like for us personally, as well as for our network of faithful advocates and stewards, and share tools to help you stay strong as you faithfully care for creation.

While this event has traditionally been on a Saturday, we’re going to try a weeknight evening this time to be more inclusive of our Jewish friends who celebrate Shabbat. We know some of you will be headed from work so no worries if you aren’t able to make it right at 6. We’ll start with fellowship and food, then the program will begin closer to 6:30.

FAN announces this year's award winners

The Faith Action Network Annual Dinner is fast approaching. This year's keynote speaker will be Washington State Supreme Court Justice Mary Yu, who will talk about what justice looks like from her perspective. FAN will also mark the 30th Anniversary of the Apology Letter to Northwest Tribes, acknowledging the healing and rebuilding that still needs to be done. Rick Steves will be present again this year.

This year’s Award Winners who will be honored that night include someone near and dear to Keystone's heart ...

Legacy Award: This year, Rev. Rich Gamble of Keystone UCC in Seattle stepped down from Co-Chairing the FAN Governing Board since its inception. FAN will honor him for his dedicated work as a founder and leader, helping to guide the merger of the Washington Association of Churches and Lutheran Public Policy Office into the creation of FAN. Rich excelled at providing vision, coaching through bumps along the road, reminding FAN of its mission, and being a faithful prophetic voice. He also founded the Justice Leadership Program through the United Church of Christ, which is making a difference for young adult leadership and engagement in social justice. FAN will honor these legacies, and knows he’s not done yet!
