Maru leads Northwest Detention Center Resistance (NWDCR), an organization that was founded when immigratns held at the Northwest Detention Center began a series of hunger strikes in 2014 protesting their inhumane treatment. ICE is targeting Maru because of her activism, targeting organizers and activists like her as part of their racially motivated deportation agenda. The Justice Leadership Program, affiliate of the national Young Adult Service Communities Network, seeks motivated young people ages 21-35 for an 11-month internship beginning in September 2018. Interns learn community organizing and political advocacy working full time at a Seattle-based nonprofit, while living in intentional community and serving a local congregation. Justice Leadership Jubilee is filling its next cohort of volunteers, who serve part-time for six to nine months at a local organization working for structural change toward social justice..
