IN OTHER NEWS: Our own JLP Intern, Alyssa Nedrow, created a blog post to reflect on her experience from a cleansing ritual at the Jungle last Friday, as she shared in our worship offering Sunday March 13.  Read her post at: http://www.alyssanedrow.com/blog/stillness

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Click HERE to read Pastor Rich Gamble's letter to the congregation, regarding our decision to enter talks about a possible merger with University Baptist Church.

Holy Week Events:

Holy Table Turning Monday
Date: March 21, 2016
Time: 12:30 – 1:30pm (lunchtime)
Location: Offices of Howard S. Wright - 415 1st Ave N #400 Seattle, WA 98109
We will gather across the street, slightly south of HSW offices, in the plaza in front of Key Arena.

European Dissent will sponsor an action on Monday, March 21 to express our opposition to King County’s new youth jail. This will be a faith-based action with a Christian focus. All are welcome to attend in support of this action.

EPIC: Ending the Prison Industrial Complex, YUIR: Youth Undoing Institutional Racism, and others have organized strong, community-based opposition to King County’s $210 million plan for a new youth jail since the project’s introduction in 2012. An expansion of the Prison Industrial Complex, this project will enable corporations and individuals to earn a profit by jailing youth of color. The County has made several amendments to their plans as a result of this grassroots pressure, and the Seattle City Council passed a resolution stating their goal of “Zero Use of Detention for Youth.” These small changes demonstrate the paradigm shift occurring within our County, but we still stand with EPIC, YUIR, and so many others in saying No New Youth Jail!

We will turn the tables on the institutions making money by caging kids of color, represented by the corporation of Howard S. Wright, who secured a $154 million taxpayer-funded contract to build the new facility. We will also turn the tables on our own institution: predominantly white church. We recognize that the good charitable work we do as Christians happens concurrently with our complicity in a system designed to economically benefit white people. Our liberation is bound together and we must add our voices to those who are most affected and are calling out for justice.

A year ago, we held our first Holy Table Turning Monday Action at the offices of Howard S. Wright. Over the last year, community organizing collectives led by people of color continued to apply strategic pressure to King County Council, Executive Dow Constantine, Seattle City Council, Seattle Department of Planning and Development, while proactively building anti-racist alternatives to incarceration. European Dissent was asked to continue putting pressure on the developer. Over the last six months over 20 faith communities have written letters to Howard S. Wright. We will deliver these letters to remind Howard S. Wright that we are building a movement that cannot be stopped.

Please R.S.V.P. for the Action: Email famous.claire@gmail.com or call 206.909.8758

In Faith,
European Dissent

(European Dissent is a group of white anti-racist organizers who work in close accountable relationship with the People's Institute Northwest, Ending the Prison Industrial Complex, and Youth Undoing Institutional Racism. All of these groups are currently working to stop the building of a new youth jail in Seattle. Phone: 253-355-0262

Agape Supper

Date: Thursday, March 24
Time: 7 pm
Location: Keystone UCC, 5019 Keystone Place North, Seattle, 98103

Come into community during Holy Week to share an evening of ritual, song, & supper.  We remember the last days Jesus had with disciples, as we enact hand washing & share our meal.  Pause for prayer and contemplation at two reflection stations.  ’Maundy' means commandment, as demonstrated in the great commitment to love as God loves.  Jesus' example to serve and love one another is our focus.  As we listen to the scriptures tell of Jesus last night with followers, we consider our suffering, and the path to liberation and freedom.

Please SIGN UP HERE
(Note: Some of the items on this list already have volunteers.  Please email Lauren and she will let you know.  Or see Marilyn & clipboard at church Sunday March 20.)

Bring or do what you can.  Each Maundy Thursday at Keystone unfolds the story of God’s abundance and grace as people offer what they are inspired to cook or bring!  (Change it up if you need to.)  It all adds up to a beautiful evening feast!

Pacific northwest salmon is our centerpiece, as we recall the symbol of fish, the Greek ichthus, that marked those who followed in the way of Jesus. Desert and generous time for conversation, and singing a plenty.  Communion in the round.  Come to deepen relationships and build new ones.  Come as you are!

This year we are lucky to have two opportunities to worship on Good Friday March 25th:

#1:
Keystone UCC Good Friday Service w/ Rev. Rich Gamble

Date: Friday, March 25
Time: 7 pm
Location: Keystone UCC, Learning Center (upstairs), 5019 Keystone Place N  98103

The Service of Tenebrae (meaning "shadows") originated as an ancient Christian ritual from the 8th century.  This service allows us to remember the last hours of Jesus' life.  Take time to observe Good Friday with our Keystone community, for this sparse, powerful, twilight service of readings, song, and candle extinguishing.

Questions: Contact Rev. Rich Gable at rich.gamble@keystoneseattle.org

#2:
“7 Last Words” Good Friday Service Preached by 7 women
w/ Rev. Lauren Cannon
Date: Friday, March 25
Time: 7 pm
Location: Madrona Grace Presbyterian, 832 32nd Ave, Seattle, WA 98122.

This year Keystone UCC offers an additional option for Good Friday.  We partner with Liberation UCC for an ecumenical worship with several Seattle churches.  Liberation UCC leads us to acknowledge the crucifixion of Christ as seven women (Rev. Lauren is one) preach Jesus’ last words.   All are invited - come hear each last word of Christ, as we consider what it means for us and the church community as a whole.  Mother Eleta Wright will serve as the MC, and offer the blessings.

(1) Rev. Kelle Brown (Plymouth UCC)
Matthew 27:46 “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” ~ “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

(2) Rev. Lauren Cannon (Keystone UCC)
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34).

(3) Rev. Cheri Starchman (SpiritVision)
“I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43).

(4) Rev. Joy Haertig (Magnolia UCC)
“Father, into Your hands I commit my spirit” (Luke 23:46).

(5) Rev. Dr. Diane Schmitz (University UCC/ Seattle U.)
“Dear Woman, here is your son!” and “Here is your mother!” (John 19:26-27).

(6) Rev. Dr. Renee McCoy (Eastgate UCC)

“I am thirsty” (John 19:28). from Psalm 69:21: “They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.”

(7) Rev. Amy Roon (University Congregational UCC)
“It is finished!”  (John 19:30).

We hope to see you there!

from The Episcopal Church House of Bishops for Holy Week 2016

This week in Cleveland, Rev. Mike Denton, our Conference Minister for the Pacific Northwest Conference United Church of Christ, met with the other 38 Conference Ministers and national UCC staff.  As part of their work, they read a statement made by the College of Bishops about this election season's rhetoric and they made the decision to send both a statement of support to our Episcopal Colleagues, as well as share this with UCC churches. In both body's memory, this is the first time something like this has happened.

The Council of Conference Ministers is asking UCC churches to consider this statement over Palm Sunday, as a part of preparations for Holy Week. We've all been doing a lot of work to figure out what's allowable under the law and both the UCC and Episcopal legal counsels have said that this statement does not cross any legal lines.

Here's the link to an article about this statement on the UCC website:
