Paisley report back from

UCC Western Regional Youth Event

(Paisley in back row with raised hand)

June 25-29, Keystone member Paisley Smith traveled to Honolulu, Hawai’i to participate in the UCC Western Regional Youth Event (WRYE), hosted by the Hawaiian UCC Conference. With about 400 other youth and adults from the western region states of the US, Paisley engaged in worship, service projects and heard from inspirational speakers. Here is a report back from Paisley:

Last Week I attended WRYE (western regional youth event), a social justice advocacy camp for teenagers put on by the UCC. This year it was in Hawai’i, so we learned a lot about Polynesian culture, by doing service projects with Hawai'ian natives and going to the Polynesian cultural center. We also attended workshops to teach us about spreading justice through song, faith, leadership and more. I attended the Song Making and Mural Making workshops (pictured here).

I left hoping to continue to spread the social justice advocacy knowledge that I learned while on the trip, specifically, on indigenous people's right. There, I learned how the native Hawai'ians were treated poorly by the white people, but their culture is alive and well and must be honored and celebrated.

Overall it was a really fun experience and I would recommend to all youth out there of all faiths.

Vigil for Safe Jobs and Safe Communities

Northeast Seattle neighborhoods are undergoing rapid turnover and development, without sufficient and meaningful input from local communities and advocates. Seattle Workers for Justice is supporting local neighbors and small business concerns about public involvement processes and safety concerns like crosswalks, and of workers on several new developments who have experienced bullying on the job, and have worked on projects without adequate training, safety equipment, or safety training.

The majority of the workers in the industry are Latinx and need you to make sure our message get across!

Join us in a vigil and community outreach.

Date: Thursday, July 26
Time: 10:00am
Location: Corner of NE 65th Ave and 15th Ave NE, Southeast of Roosevelt High School

For more information, contact D Pei Wu, datjwj@gmail.com

Join the youth-led growing No New Youth Jail effort

Barb brought our Keystone spirit to the June 28th evening vigil of interfaith prayers, song, and sharing that wove together how our traditions call us to prevent a new youth jail from being built, and how we can create alternatives, for the liberation of all.

Organizers thanked everyone for the prayerful and centered space. & will hold another faithful witness again soon.  Mentioned by faith leaders at the gathering:

Winter Faith Formation/Upcoming Discussion Group:
Forward Together

Keystone Friends,

Come out to study and be together in these weeks of Lent. Wednesday February 28, we began our four-week faith formation series "Forward Together" at Keystone United Church of Christ.  This series is team-taught by Rev. Lauren Cannon, Rev. Rich Gamble, Pastor Yuki Schwartz, and Justice Leadership Program intern Hunter Paulson-Smith.

4 Wednesdays, 6:30 - 8:00pm
Feb. 28, Mar. 7, Mar. 14, Mar. 21.

Series held in Battson Hall, which will be open each Wednesday at 6 pm, with tea and soups available so that you can warm up.  Then, 6-6:30 pm, the Fireside Room offers you a place to browse the short book chapters.

Each evening includes:
some Bible study/activity
some story telling or discernment
book discussion
prayers & music

The book is simply our springboard.  Here is the flavor, and Reading List:

Feb. 28- Why we show up. Our moral call.  Discussing what is our moral foundation.
Read: Introduction, Chapters 1 & 2. "The Need to Know Who We Are in Times Like These."

March 7- Who will show up? Our fusion politics. For what we stand.  How we stand together.
Read Chapters 5 & 6, watch Ted talk: https://www.ted.com/talks/kimberle_crenshaw_the_urgency_of_intersectionality
"Education, Economic Justice, and Voting Rights."
"Labor, Women, and Economic Justice."

March 14- How we will show up? What gifts we bring to this movement. How might Keystone community offer our gifts, skills.  Our faith.
Read Chapter 11
"Our Alliance with LGBT Rights."

March 21- When and where we show up.  When are you led to contribute individually in actions?  Then come fortify and share in worship, week by week?  Are you seeing Keystone Church on the move en masse?  Keystone as action generating base?  Called to witness as Keystone church to support groups in existing actions?
Read Chapter 13 & 14
Beyond Protest to Voter Mobilization.
Lessons from the Movement.

Let us know any questions (lauren.cannon@keystoneseattle.org)

RECAP: February 28 -our Bible study portion bounced off the scripture from worship February 25, and Rev. Rich's discipleship theme.  We were invited to think about our own stories of moral call, as we studied Mark 8:31-36.

8:31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

8:32 He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

8:33 But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things."

8:34 He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

8:35 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.

8:36 For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life?

The book is simply our springboard.  No one need sweat the reading.  We gather to be together in study.  Group discussion format.  Drop in any week.  See you Wednesday!

- Rev. Lauren Cannon

Forward Together
A Moral Message for the Nation

by Rev. Dr. William Barber II, Barbara Zelter

In the spring of 2013, seventeen people gathered at the North Carolina state capitol to protest extreme legislation passed by the General Assembly. Thousands joined the “Moral Mondays” rallies, making this sustained moral protest one of the largest acts of civil disobedience in U.S. history. Rev. Dr. William Barber II, a pastor and president of the North Carolina Conference of the NAACP and an architect of the Forward Together Moral Movement, tells the story of a new fusion civil rights movement, a “big tent,” in which black and white, gay and straight, rich and poor, old and young, Republicans and Democrats are all welcome.
