WHAT A YEAR!! July is our Justice Leadership Program intern's last month with us. Iris Chavez will be preaching Sunday, July 16 and we will have a closing ceremony for her on Sunday, July 23. Her last day serving at the Church Council of Greater Seattle is Thursday, July 27, and her last day in the Justice Leadership Program is Monday, July 31.
Families: Pick up Children's Activity pages & crayons on the welcome table every week as you come in to worship (based on the scripture of the day.) There are two types: younger children & older children. Children of any age are always part of worship & welcome!

'Bridging the Divide' follow up Workshop:
Constructive Communication for Difficult Times

As people of faith we have deep work ahead this year. It can be sustained, nurtured, and challenged in community at Keystone. The planning team of our recent 'Bridging the Divide' series is inspired to help build a container for some regular fellowship gatherings at Keystone. Perhaps every six weeks? Or per quarter? Come hear more on July 19!
Nora Ludviksen and Jim Levy will again be our facilitators on July 19 for a Follow Up Workshop, to:
- debrief after a difficult conversation-- here is your inspiration to get it tackled before we meet!

- find coaching as you plan to engage an upcoming conversation.

Celebrations: Jenn Hagedorn recognized at national UCC Synod in Baltimore, MD on July 1!
We cheer with Jenn Hagedorn who was recently presented with the Valerie E. Russell Youth and Young Adult Award for her outstanding social justice work! #UCCGS.
Jenn is now studying at Union Theological Seminary in NYC, and is doing an internship this summer at the UCC headquarters in Cleveland Ohio.
Teachers that introduced her for her acceptance, reflected on her anti-racism work and connections with her recent Masters of Public Health at University of Washington relating racism and public health.

Keystone, JLP Celebrated Victory for Airport Concession Workers
Background on June 27 action: After years of worker stories and support from community (especially the IEJC) the Port of Seattle Commission is finally fixing the most broken part of conditions for airport food workers – clear expectations to restaurants and retailers how they should treat workers. How are they doing this? Through a new policy will reward companies offering good wages and benefits when companies compete against each other to win leases. This means the companies who have been violating Prop 1 will likely not be asked to do business at the Airport. This is huge for all of the workers of color, women, immigrants and refugees left out of the benefits of Prop 1.Simple, no? But it comes after a ten-year struggle that included untold hours of worker organizing, community action, and the passage of SeaTac Proposition 1. At the June 27 Port Commission meeting, we 1) celebrated a win with workers and 2) told the Port they are doing the right thing (when is the last time we got to do that!?)

Interfaith Economic Justice Coalition (IEJC)
monthly meetings~ 'love of neighbor'
Opportunity to witness for justice: Interfaith Economic Justice Coalition monthly meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 10 AM, with Keystone represented by Pastor Lauren & our Justice Leadership Program Interns. Please come just check out a meeting and see if this witness calls to you, as we 'love neighbor'. Iris Chavez (JLP '16-'17) has been helping us support concession workers at Seatac Airport and security workers at Amazon, as they fight for dignity on the job and the wages they are due; most are workers of color, women, immigrants and refugees.
Thursday July 20: 10 AM
Location rotates between south Seattle churches, libraries, and non-profits.

GREAT NEWS from our Interfaith Economic Justice Coalition: through the generous support of Unite Here Local 8, SEIU Local 6, and Rainier Valley Corps (RVC), Keystone's partner Puget Sound Sage will be hiring an organizer to support the work of the IEJC starting in August. The organizer will be participating in the fabulous RVC Fellowship program, designed to cultivate leaders of color and strong community organizations in Southeast Seattle.
At our July 20th meeting at Puget Sound Sage we will do some planning for the rest of the year, especially in preparation for our additional organizing capacity! And we will get updates on airport and Amazon workers.

The film “Sustainable” weaves together expert analysis of America’s food system with the story of one remarkable farmer, Marty Travis, who is creating a future for his family and his farming community by adopting sustainable agriculture. The film examines the inter-relationships between the environment, economics and public health. After the film, Dr. David Montgomery, Professor at the University of Washington and author of the recent book “Growing A Revolution”, will provide commentary and answer questions. He will also have signed copies of his book available for purchase. Special Guests: Dr. David Montgomery, Author of "Growing A Revolution"

Pastoral Care & Keystone UCC Hours:
Rich and Lauren can be reached at the Keystone office: (206) 632-6021. This phone is also checked remotely since both Rich and Lauren serve half-time.
Pastor Rich is available Tuesday to Thursday mornings and Friday evenings, and holds additional office times on Saturdays and Sundays. (Monday is Sabbath.) Not all of these times will Rich be in the church office. If you want to see him, it is best to make an appointment. Email him at rich.gamble@keystoneseattle.org
Pastor Lauren is available Mondays: 9:30am-3:30pm, and mornings: Tuesday-Friday, & Sundays: 9:30am- 12:30pm. Wednesday evening mid-week classes. (Saturday is Sabbath). Email Lauren to make an appointment on any of those days at lauren.cannon@keystoneseattle.org |
