Date: Thursday, Jan. 29
Time: 6:30-7:30pm. (optional potluck at 6pm)

Keystone UCC’s Justice Leadership Program intern, Amber Dickson is serving at Faith Action Network (FAN) and will be guiding us through FAN’s 2015 legislative agenda, which consist of 5 focal areas:

- Reducing wealth inequality

- Sustaining a balanced budget that does not cut social programs

- Dismantling culture of violence

- Housing and homelessness

- Environmental justice

We will also be discussing opportunities for faith communities to take action during this session. Please join us for this evening of education and advocacy.

RSVP:  Rev. Lauren Cannon, Associate Pastor, Keystone UCC, lauren.cannon@keystoneseattle.org; or Amber Dickson, UCC Justice Leadership Program intern at Keystone UCC and Faith Action Network organizing intern, dickson@fanwa.org

GREAT NEWS!

Seattle City Council approves “priority hire” ordinance

As many of you know, Connie Voget has been serving as our Keystone rep in support of Priority Hiring (which Keystone voted to endorse, last spring), with Lauren also at events as a Keystone presence.

And we were heard!

Connie was at the Seattle City Council meeting this past Tuesday when the Priority Hire Ordinance passed unanimously 9-0!

Keystone is proud we faithfully helped amplify voices asking for this historic new law that requires City's construction contractors to hire workers from economically distressed zip codes in Seattle and King County, thereby increasing job and apprenticeship training opportunities for individuals of color and low-income women. Under this ordinance, at least 20 percent of the labor hours across all the projects will be performed by priority workers by 2016.

Way to go Keystone!

Film: "
RETURN OF THE RIVER
"

 with the Filmmaker, John Gussman
(69 min, John Gussman, Jessica Plumb, 2014)

Friday, Jan. 23; Doors open at 6:30pm; Movie starts at 7:00pm
@ Keystone UCC (downstairs in Battson Hall)

Return of the River" offers a story of hope and possibility amid grim environmental news. It is a film for our time: an invitation to consider crazy ideas that could transform the world for the better. It features an unlikely success story for environmental and cultural restoration. Fundamentally, the Elwha River in Washington State is a story about people and the land they inhabit. The film captures the tenacity of individuals who would not give up on a river, mirroring the tenacity of salmon headed upstream to spawn. It is a narrative with global ramifications, exploring the complex relationship between communities and the environment that sustains them. The camera soars over mountain headwaters, dives into schools of salmon, and captures turbines grinding to a halt; as the largest dam removal project in history begins. The film features people and perspectives on all sides of the Elwha debate, reflecting the many voices of the Elwha valley.
