The work continues to reunite thousands of immigrant families torn apart by our government.

KEYSTONE @ VIGIL FOR HUMAN RIGHTS
On Wednesday, August 29, Keystone members Amber, Margaret, Lisa, Daniel and Caleb joined Faith Action Network (FAN) and the Community Alliance for Global Justice at a Vigil for Human Rights outside of the Seattle offices of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Vigils were held there every weekday morning in August, by different groups. This is the office building where ICE and Border Patrol agents report to work, and immigrants arrive for hearings at the Seattle Immigration Court in the same building.

The actions and policies of our government continues to break up families, detain migrants in inhumane conditions, and violate the rights of due process and asylum. We ask our leaders to end this mistreatment of migrants and refugees.

Need more information about these events or to learn more about upcoming actions, protests, and events, visit Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network for updates at waimmigrantsolidaritynetwork.org.

Disrupt Hate Now!
Bystander Intervention Workshop

Harassment and hate speech are on the rise across the country, and effective intervention is difficult and risky. This workshop is interactive and immersive, designed to help participants practice intervention strategies and learn what works and what doesn't. Based on role-playing, these workshops help participants identify situations that are or may become hate-based, support the targeted person, and de-escalate the situation.

Pastor Lauren writes:  Pastor Andrew rooted this workshop from theory using Theatre of the Oppressed, developed buy Augusto Boal in Brazil.  We have some knowledge in the room – sometimes it just needs encouragement to come forth.

Date: Sunday, Sept. 16
Time: 2:00-3:30pm
Location: Admiral UCC, 4320 SW Hill Street, Seattle 98116

Lets refine our training and head after church to see our friends at Admiral UCC in West Seattle.  More information is available at http://admiralchurch.org/bystanter-intervention/

Weaving Our Strengths:
Narratives of Hope

From Rev. Lauren:
You may have been considering a workshop or two, as you heard us talking this opportunity up in Announcements on Sundays.  Check out all the JLP alums teaching workshops! You don’t want to miss the Weaving Our Strengths Conference on September 29, sponsored by the Church Council of Greater Seattle. It’s a day-long conference of inspiration, skill-building and networking to strengthen local churches’ efforts for the common good. Keystone can attend to share some leanings and wisdom, raise our game, and make connections.

Date: Saturday, Sept. 29
Time: 8:00am – 3:15pm
Location: Mercer Island Presbyterian Church, 3605 84th Ave. SE., Mercer Island 98040

Registration, workshop details, and more are available on the Church Council website at www.thechurchcouncil.org/wos. Workshop themes include organizing for church vitality; environmental and housing justice; spirituality & justice “reset”; our call to advocacy; standing with our Muslim neighbors; equity in daily life; racial justice; civility; cultural humility; and discernment.

Scholarships are available and free childcare is available with pre-registration by September 22. Coffee, tea, and snacks provided. A food vendor is invited for lunch. Free parking is available. There will also be a shuttle between the Mercer Island Park and Ride and the conference.

The Conference regularly draws 200 people from 15+ denominations and faith traditions and 55+ congregations. Here are two bits of the feedback from last year:

“I love how everything was so local. It made it feel like we could do everything that we heard about was actually possible. It felt tangible.”

“I experienced lots of energy – invigorated my local congregation involvement as well as ecumenical efforts.”

Film: REINVENTING POWER

(50 minutes; Tony Valentino 2018)
Friday, Oct. 5; Doors open at 6:30pm; Movie starts at 7:00pm

@ Keystone UCC (downstairs in Battson Hall)

"Reinventing Power” takes us across the country to hear directly from the people making our clean energy future achievable. These people are working to rebuild what’s broken, rethink what’s possible, and revitalize communities. “Reinventing Power” shows that jobs, economic growth and innovation don’t have to be sacrificed for a clean environment. The film focuses on people in eight states whose lives were changed by the renewable energy industry, while exploring various aspects of clean energy from innovation to installation.

“Making this film we met incredible people who showed us the depth of this industry. Clean energy is helping people find new opportunities as our economy shifts.  It’s bringing in steady revenue for our farmers, and it is driving breakthroughs in clean technology. We saw how clean energy is made and got to experience how it is changing people’s lives for the better in a deeply personal way.” –Tony Valentino, Director

This is a Sierra Club film.  We’re excited to co-sponsor this screening with them.

Doors open at 6:30 pm for snacks and conversation.

Stay for speaker and audience discussion after the film.

Donations gratefully accepted.

Special Guests: Sierra Club speaker
Co-sponsor: Sierra Club

** All events are Open to the Public. Admission is by Donation **

We help communities organize, educate, advocate & build community around social justice documentary film and conversation.

Duwamish Film: Promised Land
at Seattle Mennonite Church

Promised Land is an award-winning social justice documentary that follows two tribes in the pacific Northwest – the Duwamish and the Chinook – as they fight for the restoration of treaty rights they’ve long been denied. In following their story, both in our region’s shared heritage and in their modern struggles for federal recognition, the film examines a larger problem in the way that the government and society still looks at tribal sovereignty.

Date: Saturday, Aug. 4
Time: 1:30pm
Location: Seattle Mennonite Church, 3120 NE 125th St., Seattle

RECAP: Vigil for Safe Jobs and Safe Communities

On Thursday, July 26, Keystone members accompanied workers in the Ravenna neighborhood for a direct action and delegation. Amber, Rich V. and Pastor Lauren were on hand to help MC and lead groups to Excell Construction offices for dialogue.

The majority of the workers in the industry are vulnerable to employer bullying and threats, including outright racist and anti-immigrant discrimination. Workers on the job have significant safety concerns, and neighbors are seeking development done right.

Here are a few pictures from a very warm morning on the street at 65th and 15th:
