Sunday November 10

Reader: Barb
Usher:  John
Nursery substitute: Mike
3-5 year old teacher:  Jim and Ruth

Thank you to our Greeter and to our Coffee Hour host.

Our scripture is from the Gospel of Luke: 19: 1-10.  Zacchaeus climbed a sycamore tree to get a better view.  Jesus spotted him and said, "Come down; for I must stay at your house today."  There was murmuring at this.  Zacchaeus was one of these tax collectors we have been studying.  In the eyes of many, he had become rich by  extorting money from those in his community.  Jesus spends a special house visit, and many respectable people are easily offended.  But in the process Zacchaeus was moved to make restitution.  He has a dramatic change of heart...

See you Sunday!

7-8:30 pm class-  all welcome.
at Keystone- downstairs in Battson Hall

Come join this second week of study, conversation, resourcing, and inspiration alongside our UCC young adult justice interns.  We will be exploring texts to see how they offer biblical and theological grounding for motivating each of us in whatever justice work we are called to do.  (This class accommodates those who can only come this second night- so feel free!)  We are using curriculum from our UCC denomination:  “Justice Leaders Engaging and Developing”:

Justice Leadership Program: Pacific Northwest

Check out the link below to blog posts by Karin at Earth Ministry, and by Margie on our new JLP website!

On November 9, Rich, Lauren, Kathryn, (and OK Leo went too) traveled out to Pilgrim Firs Camp and Conference Center of our Pacific Northwest Conference UCC to present an ask.  Up from $12,000 to $15,000 to conduct outreach to grow the program and recruit candidates for next year.  It was another encouraging and heartening meeting as we presented our five year plan and budget.

On November 18-21, Elizabeth, Rich, Lauren, Kathryn (and Leo) are back out to Pilgrim Firs camp to host a bunch of national UCC partners and other host churches from around the country, who are running their Young Adult Service Communities, or seek to begin one.  This great group of UCC folks is coming from other cities that have hosted in these last 5 years, or want to begin.  The gathering is with our national UCC staff from Volunteer Ministries, and joined by folks from Justice and Witness Ministries.  JLP is helping host this planning and evaluation time.

Have you checked out our new website, blog and Facebook page and invited friends to "like" our page!?  Encourage young adults you know to look at the application for next year: early decision is December 15, 2013; otherwise February 15, 2014.

November 3 All Saints and Upcoming Events

This week coming up...

Sundays 10:30 a.m.
Come see how we love!

Sunday November 3

10:30 a.m. Worship- All Saints Day

Bring hearts ready to commemorate loved ones, who have crossed over.  We will share names of those who have passed as we remember dear ones.  In worship, with candle lighting before communion.

Remember "fall back" re-set clocks back an hour to standard time.

A powerful text from Isaiah raises the question of what kinds of actions are most pleasing to God.  All the right and dutiful burnt sacrifices?  Care and compassion for stranger and outcast?  Then, our teaching story from the Gospel of Luke shows how one who really kind of ripping off those in his community, was moved to make restitution, after Jesus came to his house (and caught the public attention of everyone else wondering what Jesus was thinking!)
